?What is Anti-Thyroglobulin (Anti-TG)?

Anti-thyroglobulin antibodies (Anti-TG or TgAb) are autoantibodies directed against thyroglobulin, the protein precursor of thyroid hormones T3 and T4. They are markers of autoimmune thyroid disease. Anti-TG is measured alongside anti-TPO to comprehensively assess thyroid autoimmunity.

!Why It Matters

Elevated Anti-TG is present in Hashimoto's thyroiditis (the most common cause of hypothyroidism worldwide) and Graves' disease. Anti-TG also interferes with thyroglobulin assays used to monitor differentiated thyroid cancer recurrence, making its measurement critical in post-thyroidectomy monitoring. Isolated Anti-TG elevation without Anti-TPO is less common but clinically significant.
