Understanding Cholesterol/HDL Ratio: Normal vs Optimal Ranges
Also known as: TC/HDL Ratio, Total Cholesterol to HDL Ratio
?What is Cholesterol/HDL Ratio?
The cholesterol/HDL ratio (also called the cardiac risk ratio) divides total cholesterol by HDL cholesterol. It provides a single number summarising the balance between all cholesterol-carrying particles and the protective HDL fraction. A lower ratio indicates a better lipid profile.
!Why It Matters
Some research suggests the cholesterol/HDL ratio may be a stronger predictor of cardiovascular events than total cholesterol or LDL alone. A ratio above 5 is considered elevated risk; below 3.5 is considered optimal. The ratio reflects both the burden of atherogenic particles and the efficiency of reverse cholesterol transport.
Reference Ranges
| Range Type | Min | Max | Unit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lab Normal | — | 5 | ratio | Standard lab reference range |
Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.
Symptoms of Imbalance
- No direct symptoms from an abnormal ratio
How to Improve Your Levels
- 1Raise HDL through exercise and healthy fats
- 2Lower total and LDL cholesterol through diet
- 3Both improvements simultaneously produce the greatest ratio reduction
When to Test
Calculated from your lipid panel — no separate test needed.
