Understanding eGFR: Normal vs Optimal Ranges

Also known as: Estimated GFR, Glomerular Filtration Rate, E-GFR

KidneyUnit: mL/min/1.73m²

?What is eGFR?

eGFR (estimated glomerular filtration rate) measures how effectively the kidneys filter waste from the blood, expressed as the volume of blood filtered per minute per 1.73 m² of body surface area. It is calculated from serum creatinine, age, sex, and sometimes race. eGFR is the standard measure for staging chronic kidney disease (CKD).

!Why It Matters

eGFR directly quantifies kidney function and helps stage CKD: stage 1 (≥90), stage 2 (60–89), stage 3 (30–59), stage 4 (15–29), stage 5 (<15 — kidney failure). Even mildly reduced eGFR (60–89) significantly increases cardiovascular risk. Early identification of declining eGFR allows interventions that can slow or halt progression to kidney failure.

Reference Ranges

Lab Normal90mL/min/1.73m²Standard lab reference range

Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.

Symptoms of Imbalance

  • eGFR above 30: often no symptoms
  • eGFR 15–30: fatigue, decreased appetite, fluid retention
  • eGFR below 15: requires dialysis or transplant consideration

How to Improve Your Levels

  • 1Control blood pressure (target <130/80 mmHg) — the most impactful intervention
  • 2Control blood sugar in diabetes — HbA1c below 7% protects kidneys
  • 3ACE inhibitors or ARBs slow kidney decline in diabetic nephropathy
  • 4Avoid nephrotoxic drugs (NSAIDs, contrast agents, aminoglycoside antibiotics)
  • 5Maintain hydration, avoid dehydration
  • 6Low-sodium diet reduces kidney strain
  • 7GLP-1 agonists (semaglutide) show kidney-protective effects in recent trials

When to Test

Annually in diabetes, hypertension, or cardiovascular disease. Every 6 months if eGFR is below 60. Note: eGFR calculations were originally derived from non-Indian populations — some correction factors may apply.
