Understanding GFR by MDRD Formula: Normal vs Optimal Ranges

Also known as: glomerular filtration rate mdrd, egfr mdrd, estimated gfr mdrd, mdrd egfr

Renal FunctionUnit: mL/min/1.73m²

?What is GFR by MDRD Formula?

The MDRD (Modification of Diet in Renal Disease) formula estimates glomerular filtration rate (GFR) based on serum creatinine, age, sex, and race to assess kidney function. It was one of the first widely adopted equations for estimating kidney function non-invasively. GFR represents the volume of fluid filtered by the kidneys per minute and is considered the best overall indicator of kidney function.

!Why It Matters

GFR by MDRD helps identify kidney disease stages and monitor kidney function decline over time. Abnormal or declining GFR may suggest chronic kidney disease, acute kidney injury, or other renal conditions that require clinical attention and lifestyle or medical intervention.

Reference Ranges

Range TypeMinMaxUnitNote
Lab Normal60mL/min/1.73m²Standard lab reference range
Optimal90mL/min/1.73m²Evidence-based optimal range for health
Longevity Target90mL/min/1.73m²Per longevity medicine research (Attia et al.)

Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.

Symptoms of Imbalance

  • Fatigue and weakness
  • Swelling in ankles, feet, or hands
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea or loss of appetite
  • Changes in urination patterns

How to Improve Your Levels

  • 1Maintain blood pressure within target range through medication and lifestyle changes
  • 2Control blood sugar if diabetic through diet, exercise, and medication adherence
  • 3Reduce sodium intake to less than 2,300 mg per day
  • 4Stay well-hydrated and maintain adequate water intake
  • 5Follow a renal-friendly diet low in potassium and phosphorus if advised
  • 6Avoid nephrotoxic medications and substances; consult healthcare provider before taking new drugs

When to Test

GFR by MDRD should be tested during routine health screenings, annually for those with risk factors (diabetes, hypertension, family history of kidney disease), or when symptoms suggest kidney dysfunction. It is also monitored in patients already diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.
