Understanding Total IgE: Normal vs Optimal Ranges
Also known as: IgE Level, Immunoglobulin E, Total IgE
?What is Total IgE?
Total IgE (immunoglobulin E) is an antibody class produced by the immune system primarily in response to parasites and allergens. Elevated total IgE is associated with allergic diseases (asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis) and parasitic infections.
!Why It Matters
Very high total IgE (>1000 IU/mL) almost always indicates either severe allergic disease or parasitic infection. Moderately elevated IgE is a non-specific finding common in atopic individuals. Total IgE does not identify specific allergies — specific IgE testing or skin prick tests are needed for that. Elevated IgE in India often indicates parasitic infestation, which is more common than in Western countries.
Reference Ranges
| Range Type | Min | Max | Unit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lab Normal | — | 100 | IU/mL | Standard lab reference range |
Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.
Symptoms of Imbalance
- Allergic symptoms: sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes, asthma, skin rashes, hives
- Very high IgE with eosinophilia: parasitic infection
How to Improve Your Levels
- 1Allergen avoidance for allergic disease
- 2Treat underlying parasitic infections if eosinophilia is also present
- 3Vitamin D optimisation may reduce allergic sensitisation
When to Test
Part of allergy workup or when eosinophilia is found. Also used to monitor biologics therapy for allergic disease.
