Understanding Adiponectin: Normal vs Optimal Ranges
Also known as: adiponectin
?What is Adiponectin?
Adiponectin is an anti-inflammatory hormone secreted exclusively by adipose tissue that enhances insulin sensitivity, promotes fatty acid oxidation, and suppresses hepatic glucose production. Paradoxically, adiponectin levels are inversely correlated with body fat mass — obese individuals have lower adiponectin despite having more fat tissue. It is one of the most important adipokines for cardiometabolic health.
!Why It Matters
Low adiponectin is an independent predictor of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and metabolic syndrome, even after adjusting for BMI and other risk factors. Adiponectin has direct anti-atherosclerotic effects: it inhibits foam cell formation, reduces endothelial inflammation, and promotes reverse cholesterol transport. Interventions that raise adiponectin — particularly aerobic exercise and weight loss — have proven cardiometabolic benefits.
Reference Ranges
| Range Type | Min | Max | Unit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lab Normal | 5 | 30 | µg/mL | Standard lab reference range |
| Optimal | 10 | 30 | µg/mL | Evidence-based optimal range for health |
| Longevity Target | 10 | 30 | µg/mL | Per longevity medicine research (Attia et al.) |
Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.
Symptoms of Imbalance
- Insulin resistance and difficulty losing weight despite caloric restriction
- Elevated fasting glucose or HbA1c
- Low HDL and elevated triglycerides (atherogenic dyslipidaemia)
- Visceral obesity and metabolic syndrome
- Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)
How to Improve Your Levels
- 1Aerobic exercise is the most potent raiser of adiponectin — 30 min/day of moderate exercise
- 2Weight loss: each 10% body weight reduction raises adiponectin by 30–40%
- 3Caloric restriction and Mediterranean diet increase adiponectin levels
- 4Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA/DHA) upregulate adiponectin secretion
- 5Magnesium — deficiency is associated with low adiponectin; supplementation may help
- 6Some medications (thiazolidinediones, fibrates) raise adiponectin as part of their mechanism
When to Test
Metabolic syndrome or obesity workup; insulin resistance evaluation; cardiovascular risk stratification in individuals with visceral adiposity; NAFLD investigation.
