?What is Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA)?

CEA is a protein normally present in small amounts in the blood of healthy adults. Elevated levels may be associated with certain cancers, particularly colorectal, lung, and breast cancers, as well as benign conditions. CEA is primarily used as a tumor marker to monitor treatment response or detect recurrence in cancer patients rather than for initial screening.

!Why It Matters

Elevated CEA levels can suggest the presence of malignancy or monitor cancer progression and treatment effectiveness. However, CEA is not cancer-specific and can be elevated in non-cancerous conditions including smoking, inflammatory bowel disease, and benign liver disease, so abnormal results require further clinical evaluation and imaging.
