?What is Lipoprotein(a)?
Lipoprotein(a) — or Lp(a) — is a modified form of LDL with an additional protein called apolipoprotein(a) attached. Unlike other lipoproteins, Lp(a) levels are almost entirely determined by genetics (the LPA gene) and are not significantly altered by diet or most standard cholesterol medications.

Elevated Lp(a) is an independent, genetically-determined risk factor for heart attack, stroke, and aortic valve disease. It is found in approximately 20% of the global population and is more prevalent in certain ethnic groups including South Asians, Africans, and those with familial hypercholesterolaemia. Since Lp(a) is largely genetic, knowing your level helps stratify risk and intensify other modifiable risk factor management.
