Understanding Occludin IgA: Normal vs Optimal Ranges

Also known as: occludin iga

Gut HealthUnit: U/mL

?What is Occludin IgA?

Occludin is a tight junction protein that forms the structural seal between intestinal epithelial cells, preventing paracellular passage of pathogens, toxins, and antigens. When the gut barrier is damaged, occludin can be exposed to the immune system, generating IgA antibodies. Elevated occludin IgA indicates active tight junction disruption and is a direct marker of intestinal permeability at the mucosal level.

!Why It Matters

Occludin antibodies provide mechanistic evidence of tight junction breakdown — the molecular basis of leaky gut. Unlike zonulin (which opens tight junctions reversibly), occludin antibodies suggest structural damage that may require weeks to months of gut-healing interventions to resolve. Occludin IgA is particularly useful for monitoring recovery from gut permeability-related conditions.

Reference Ranges

Range TypeMinMaxUnitNote
Lab Normal10U/mLStandard lab reference range
Optimal5U/mLEvidence-based optimal range for health
Longevity Target5U/mLPer longevity medicine research (Attia et al.)

Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.

Symptoms of Imbalance

  • Food sensitivities appearing to new foods over time
  • Gut symptoms: bloating, alternating bowel habits, urgency
  • Systemic inflammatory or autoimmune conditions
  • Nutrient malabsorption despite adequate dietary intake

How to Improve Your Levels

  • 1Eliminate gut-damaging triggers: NSAIDs, alcohol, gluten (if reactive), processed foods
  • 2Supplement with L-glutamine and zinc carnosine to support tight junction repair
  • 3Use colostrum or collagen peptides to support gut mucosal healing
  • 4Increase short-chain fatty acid production via high-fibre diet and butyrate supplementation
  • 5Address underlying inflammatory bowel conditions or infections driving barrier damage

When to Test

Intestinal permeability panel; autoimmune disease workup; unexplained food sensitivities; inflammatory bowel disease monitoring; post-antibiotic gut restoration.
