Understanding LPS IgA: Normal vs Optimal Ranges

Also known as: lps iga

Gut HealthUnit: U/mL

?What is LPS IgA?

LPS IgA measures secretory IgA antibodies against lipopolysaccharide (LPS), a component of the outer membrane of gram-negative bacteria such as E. coli. LPS is a potent endotoxin: when intestinal permeability is increased ('leaky gut'), LPS translocates from the gut lumen into the bloodstream, triggering immune activation. Elevated LPS IgA indicates mucosal immune exposure to bacterial endotoxins.

!Why It Matters

Chronic LPS translocation is a driver of systemic low-grade inflammation, insulin resistance, atherosclerosis, and metabolic endotoxaemia. LPS IgA is an early marker of compromised gut barrier function before systemic LPS IgG rises. Addressing gut permeability can significantly reduce LPS translocation and downstream metabolic and inflammatory disease risk.

Reference Ranges

Range TypeMinMaxUnitNote
Lab Normal10U/mLStandard lab reference range
Optimal6U/mLEvidence-based optimal range for health
Longevity Target6U/mLPer longevity medicine research (Attia et al.)

Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.

Symptoms of Imbalance

  • Persistent low-grade fatigue and brain fog
  • Post-meal bloating and gas
  • Systemic inflammatory symptoms: joint aches, skin flares
  • Worsening metabolic markers: insulin resistance, elevated triglycerides

How to Improve Your Levels

  • 1Increase dietary fibre to feed butyrate-producing bacteria that strengthen the gut lining
  • 2Reduce ultra-processed food and alcohol that damage intestinal tight junctions
  • 3Supplement with L-glutamine (5–10 g/day) to support enterocyte repair
  • 4Use zinc carnosine — shown to reduce gut permeability in clinical trials
  • 5Consider Akkermansia muciniphila or Lactobacillus probiotics to restore mucus layer

When to Test

Suspected intestinal permeability; metabolic endotoxaemia workup; chronic inflammatory conditions; alongside zonulin and occludin markers.
