?What is Specific Gravity?
Urine specific gravity measures the concentration of all solutes dissolved in urine relative to pure water. It reflects the kidney's ability to concentrate or dilute urine and is a proxy for hydration status and renal concentrating ability. Values range from maximally dilute (~1.000) to maximally concentrated (~1.035).
!Why It Matters
A persistently fixed specific gravity around 1.010 (isosthenuria) indicates renal tubular dysfunction with inability to concentrate or dilute urine. Very low specific gravity (<1.003) may indicate diabetes insipidus or excessive fluid intake. High specific gravity (>1.030) with proteinuria or glucose suggests dehydration or uncontrolled diabetes. It is a quick, inexpensive screen of renal tubular function.
