Understanding Beta Cell Function %B: Normal vs Optimal Ranges
Also known as: beta cell function (%b)
?What is Beta Cell Function %B?
Beta cell function (%B) is calculated from the HOMA-B (Homeostatic Model Assessment of Beta Cell Function) equation using fasting glucose and fasting insulin. It estimates the percentage of normal beta cell insulin secretory capacity. A value of 100% represents the mean function of a healthy non-diabetic reference population. %B >100% suggests compensatory hyperinsulinaemia; %B <100% indicates beta cell secretory impairment.
!Why It Matters
Beta cell loss in type 2 diabetes begins well before diagnosis and is largely irreversible once significant. HOMA-%B tracking enables detection of declining beta cell reserve years before HbA1c rises to diagnostic thresholds. When combined with HOMA-%S (insulin sensitivity), beta cell function provides a mechanistic picture of glucose homeostasis that informs whether deteriorating glucose control reflects insulin resistance, beta cell failure, or both.
Reference Ranges
| Range Type | Min | Max | Unit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lab Normal | 80 | 120 | % | Standard lab reference range |
| Optimal | 80 | 120 | % | Evidence-based optimal range for health |
| Longevity Target | 80 | 120 | % | Per longevity medicine research (Attia et al.) |
Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.
Symptoms of Imbalance
- No symptoms in compensated early dysfunction
- Elevated post-meal glucose despite normal fasting glucose (early failure sign)
- Fatigue after carbohydrate-rich meals
- Progressive rise in HbA1c despite stable diet and weight
How to Improve Your Levels
- 1Reduce pancreatic beta cell stress by lowering glycaemic load in the diet
- 2Intermittent fasting reduces chronic insulin demand and may preserve beta cell mass
- 3GLP-1 receptor agonists and DPP-4 inhibitors are beta cell-protective medications
- 4Treat insulin resistance aggressively — reducing IR decreases compensatory beta cell overwork
- 5Optimise vitamin D and magnesium — both support beta cell insulin synthesis
When to Test
HOMA model panel (with insulin sensitivity %S); type 2 diabetes pathophysiology workup; monitoring beta cell reserve during metabolic treatment; prediabetes progression tracking.
