?What is Folic Acid?
Folic acid (folate or vitamin B9) is a water-soluble B vitamin essential for DNA synthesis, cell division, amino acid metabolism, and the conversion of homocysteine to methionine. It is particularly critical during pregnancy — adequate folate prevents neural tube defects in the developing foetus.

Folate deficiency causes megaloblastic anaemia, elevated homocysteine (cardiovascular risk), and impaired cell division. It is the most critical nutrient in early pregnancy — deficiency in the first weeks (often before pregnancy is confirmed) is the leading cause of spina bifida and anencephaly. The MTHFR gene variant affects folate metabolism in approximately 10–15% of Indians.
