Understanding Hemoglobin: Normal vs Optimal Ranges

Also known as: Haemoglobin, Hb, HGB

Red Blood CellsUnit: g/dL

?What is Hemoglobin?

Haemoglobin is the iron-containing protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues and returns carbon dioxide to the lungs. It is the most important component of red blood cells and the primary determinant of blood's oxygen-carrying capacity. Haemoglobin measurement is central to the diagnosis and management of anaemia.

!Why It Matters

Haemoglobin below normal (anaemia) impairs oxygen delivery to tissues, causing fatigue, shortness of breath, and impaired cognitive and physical performance. In India, anaemia is one of the most prevalent health conditions, particularly in women of reproductive age. Identifying the cause of anaemia (iron deficiency, B12/folate deficiency, thalassaemia, chronic disease) is as important as the haemoglobin level itself.

Reference Ranges

Range TypeMinMaxUnitNote
Lab Normal1217.5g/dLStandard lab reference range

Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.

Symptoms of Imbalance

  • Mild anaemia: fatigue, weakness, pale skin
  • Moderate anaemia: shortness of breath on exertion, palpitations, headache
  • Severe anaemia: breathlessness at rest, chest pain, confusion
  • Elevated haemoglobin (polycythaemia): headache, dizziness, red face, thickened blood

How to Improve Your Levels

  • 1Iron-deficiency anaemia: increase iron-rich foods (red meat, leafy greens, legumes) and vitamin C (improves absorption)
  • 2Take iron supplements if prescribed — always with vitamin C, away from tea/coffee
  • 3B12 deficiency: supplementation (oral or injection) if vegetarian/vegan
  • 4Folate deficiency: increase green leafy vegetables, consider supplementation
  • 5Identify and treat bleeding sources (heavy periods, GI bleeding)

When to Test

Part of a complete blood count (CBC). Annual testing for women of reproductive age and vegetarians. Mandatory investigation when fatigue is prominent.
