Understanding Gliadin IgA Deamidated: Normal vs Optimal Ranges
Also known as: gliadin antibody iga (de-amidated, dgp)
?What is Gliadin IgA Deamidated?
Deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP) IgA antibodies are produced in response to partially digested wheat gliadin proteins that have been chemically modified by the intestinal enzyme transglutaminase 2. They are a primary screening marker for coeliac disease and non-coeliac gluten sensitivity. DGP-IgA is particularly useful in young children where total IgA may be insufficient for tTG testing.
!Why It Matters
Elevated DGP-IgA signals an immune reaction to gluten that is damaging the intestinal villi. Undiagnosed coeliac disease leads to malabsorption of iron, calcium, vitamin D, and B12, significantly increasing the risk of osteoporosis, anaemia, and autoimmune conditions. Early detection with DGP-IgA allows dietary intervention before serious complications develop.
Reference Ranges
| Range Type | Min | Max | Unit | Note |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lab Normal | — | 20 | U/mL | Standard lab reference range |
| Optimal | — | 10 | U/mL | Evidence-based optimal range for health |
| Longevity Target | — | 10 | U/mL | Per longevity medicine research (Attia et al.) |
Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.
Symptoms of Imbalance
- Chronic diarrhoea, bloating, or abdominal cramping after wheat-containing foods
- Iron-deficiency anaemia unresponsive to supplementation
- Fatigue, brain fog, and dermatitis herpetiformis skin rash
- Short stature or delayed development in children
- Unexplained osteoporosis or low bone density
How to Improve Your Levels
- 1Adopt a strict gluten-free diet if coeliac disease is confirmed — this is the definitive treatment
- 2Work with a dietitian to identify hidden gluten in processed foods, sauces, and medications
- 3Address nutritional deficiencies: iron, calcium, vitamin D, B12, folate
- 4Retest DGP-IgA after 6–12 months on a gluten-free diet to confirm antibody normalisation
- 5Screen first-degree relatives — coeliac disease has 10–15% familial prevalence
When to Test
Suspected coeliac disease; unexplained iron deficiency or malabsorption; dermatitis herpetiformis; family history of coeliac disease; children under 2 with gut symptoms.
