Understanding Gliadin IgG Deamidated: Normal vs Optimal Ranges

Also known as: gliadin antibody igg (de-amidated, dgp)

Gut HealthUnit: U/mL

?What is Gliadin IgG Deamidated?

Deamidated gliadin peptide (DGP) IgG antibodies represent a systemic immune response to gluten-derived peptides. IgG antibodies are particularly useful when total IgA is deficient (IgA deficiency is 10–15 times more common in coeliac patients than the general population), as IgA deficiency would cause false-negative IgA-based coeliac tests. DGP-IgG has high sensitivity (87–94%) for active coeliac disease.

!Why It Matters

In patients with selective IgA deficiency, DGP-IgG becomes the primary screening tool for coeliac disease. Elevated DGP-IgG in non-coeliac individuals may indicate non-coeliac gluten sensitivity (NCGS), a condition with overlapping symptoms. Monitoring DGP-IgG longitudinally tracks adherence to a gluten-free diet.

Reference Ranges

Range TypeMinMaxUnitNote
Lab Normal20U/mLStandard lab reference range
Optimal10U/mLEvidence-based optimal range for health
Longevity Target10U/mLPer longevity medicine research (Attia et al.)

Lab normal ranges may vary between laboratories. Optimal and longevity targets are based on research literature and should be interpreted with your physician.

Symptoms of Imbalance

  • Diarrhoea and abdominal distension after gluten ingestion
  • Neurological symptoms: gluten ataxia, peripheral neuropathy
  • Chronic fatigue and mood disturbances
  • Malabsorption signs: weight loss, nutrient deficiencies

How to Improve Your Levels

  • 1Eliminate all sources of gluten under confirmed coeliac disease or NCGS
  • 2Retest after 12 months on strict gluten-free diet — IgG should normalise
  • 3Address leaky gut with gut-healing nutrients: zinc, glutamine, vitamin D
  • 4Check total IgA levels to properly interpret DGP-IgA results

When to Test

Coeliac screening when IgA deficiency is suspected; monitoring gluten-free diet compliance; unexplained neurological symptoms in context of gut dysfunction.
